Spring 2008

This issue of San Marcos Magazine marks several     enhancements, as well as maturation on the part of those of us who are responsible in bringing it to you. Our continuing quest for what makes us better as a publication, which in turn heightens the experience for you, the reader, has led us on a journey of discovery we are still enjoying.

The first enhancement you may notice is a subtle change to our title, which announces to all our expanded mission to not only tell the many stories of San Marcos to our local population, but to also inform visitors and potential visitors of the many things that make our city such a great place to live, work, and play. The idea for us to become San Marcos Magazine & Visitor Information Guide came from the comments of several readers we have met over the years who told us that when they were considering relocating to the community they sought out and read this magazine to learn more about it. (I say “over the years” because, unlikely as it may seem, we are closing out our second year in print with this issue!)

The change to our title also gave my daughter and partner, Art Director Kelly Effinger, the opportunity to make a few changes to our logo. These changes are intended to streamline the look of our cover and allow the cover art to stand out. If she did it right (and I believe she did), you hardly notice the differences until you compare new with old. We are pleased with the new look, and hope you will be, too.

A new logo isn’t all we’ve changed, however. Inside you will find a city map highlighting local schools, parks, and other points of interest. In addition, you will see a listing of establishments in the city to dine, shop, and play.

Our cover feature this issue is the first installment of a story about a landscaping makeover with regional implications. Anyone who reads, watches, or listens to the news is by now aware a water crisis is looming in our region. Home, Garden & Design Editor Dawn Brookshire takes a look at ways homeowners can improve the look of their yards, while at the same time conserving this most precious resource. There are many good ideas here, and the results, which will be seen in our Summer Issue, are truly amazing.

Arts & Education Editor Heather Petrek contributes an interview with long-time San Marcos resident and local celebrity Greg Evans, creator of the nationally syndicated comic strip, Luann. Greg’s strip and the characters he’s created have delighted readers for years, and his profile by Heather gives us some insight into the reasons why they have become so beloved.

We hope that as you read this newly expanded magazine you will find that it enhances your experience here in San Marcos, whether you are a resident or visitor, and that you tell your friends and the advertisers in it, “I Saw it in San Marcos Magazine!”.
